Sustainability of Industrial Processes
Synthesis
Objectives: Considering the typical flow sheet of industrial processes, the lecture develops for each typeof streams and for the technologies the achievements of the last decades, the present trends and the
promising ideas which may participate to a more sustainable future. Most of the examples come from
personal experience on Large Projects in the process industries fields.
- Part 1 – Thermodynamics reminder: How the two Principles can differentiate what is possible from what is just a dream.
- Part 2 – Feedstock: Classical hydrocarbon feedstock, emerging feedstock (Natural gas, tight / shale gas..), feedstock for future (biomass…), interest and constraints.
- Part 3 – Innovating catalysts and technologies: enhanced performing catalysts, technologies based on NG and/or Coal (instead of liquid hydrocarbons), Integrated Gasification Combustion Cycle (IGCC Concept): what future? What technical and environmental challenges ?
- Part 4 – Utilities: saving the 2 key primary utilities: Energy and Water. Deep energetic optimization and integration, promising concept of “dry” systems, strong present and predictable achievements.
- Part 5 – Wastes treatment: Gaseous, liquid and solid treatments, “Zero Liquid Discharge” (ZLD) concept, membrane osmosis technologies breakthrough.
- Part 6 – End of life of products: Some figures for today perspectives, Used products and waste
management (recycling, energy recovery), concerns for better collection and valorization and notion of complete life cycle.
Part 7 – Conclusion: discussion.
