Petroleum Geosciences and Exploration challenges

Synthesis

1. Petroleum geosciences. Petroleum geosciences definitions
. Geosciences along the Exploration and Production process
Preliminary basin regional evaluation, block/lease exploration, prospect definition, appraisal/delineation, development, production, EOR, site restoration)
. The geosciences discipines and jobs
Geologists, geophysicists, reservoir engineers, geo-information
. Geosciences” tool box”. Techniques, methods and concepts;
Examples: remote sensing , seeps, surface geology;field/outcrop analogues, sedimentology, structural geology, organic and inorganic geochemistry, reservoirs modeling, borehole rock and fluids sampling , loggings, seismics ,
2. Explorations challenges. examples
. Seismic technology breathroughs
. Sub-salt seismic vision
. The deep offshore turbidites challenges
. Back to the old exploration days: drilling surface anticline in Kurdistan (irak)
. The artic exploration challenges
. Application of plate tectonics: export of exploration plays across the south Atlantic. From Tupi in Brazil to the Kwanza in Angola. From Jubilee, Ghana to Zaedius , French Guyana.
. Unconventional oil and gas
. Structural complex areas

Language

Français & Anglais, slides seulement en anglais

Audience type

An initiation to geosciences applications in the upstream petroleum world. For non-geoscientists, who could one day work with geoscientists. A good way to better know their jobs, their tools and their way of thinking. The second chapter “exploration challenges” provides some news about the exploration activities worldwide. This presentation could be adapted for the SVT professors in the French Lycées, as it cover in part, the programme of the “Premiere S” class

Planned duration

One full day ( about 6 hours) Could be extended to 2 days for more detailed information
