Prevention & Remediation of Natural and Industrial Disasters

Synthesis

Course Objective: The course addresses the global and regional (UN, EU, North America, Africa, and Asia notably) institutional context of workplace safety from health to environment.

Civil and Industrial Environments: It distinguishes between civil and industrial environments, which require common methodological approaches, but specific policies and practices for prevention and remediation. The theory and tools of Risk Management are introduced.

Challenges in Policy Application: The course highlights the challenges faced during the application and execution of policies and regulations, which are often imprecise, especially concerning the emergency response to natural disasters.

Safety Management Systems: While safety management systems in the industrial sectors have made significant progress over the last 30 years, the organisation and implementation of their equivalent systems in civil society, which are necessary to address more frequent and intense natural disasters, still lag behind very often.

The role of the human factor in making HSEQ policies succesfull or not is highlighted.
