Impression générale

This course was originally selected and organized by the University of Cape Town (UCT, contact: Alastair Sloan). It was later on decided to move it to UWC for practical reasons, mainly large enough room availability. Attendance was of 29 people of different origins: 19 students from UWC, 6 from UCT, one from another university (UFH), and 3 representatives of the national agency (PASA). This location may explain that half of UCT students were absent for two days or more, and therefore did not receive any score. The course is composed of lectures and 19 exercises, as a continuous assessment, spread over the first four days. Participation was good. The scores (see attached file) reflect a large spread of knowledge among the students. It is striking that the level of students coming from UCT is systematically and significantly higher than those from UWC. This course was organized as a preliminary learning of the principles of seismic interpretation, prior to practical workshop with Petrel, to be held by Schlumberger two weeks later. It was perceived as a very useful introduction to the actual use of a workstation.

Quid du futur ?

Both universities are likely to call for a similar course in the coming years. Damian Kombol made a highly appreciated presentation of Total’s exploration activity and expectations in the near future.

Questions posées par les étudiants

Questions were mainly linked to the understanding of the lectures and of the exercises.
